BC rolls out free fall-prevention clinics — how to get a referral

Saturday, May 30, 2026 · 3 min read

BC's health authorities launched no-cost in-home fall-risk assessments for adults 70+. Referrals come from a family doctor, nurse practitioner, or self-referral via 8-1-1. Wait times are currently 2–3 weeks.

What it is

All five BC regional health authorities are now running in-home fall-risk assessments for adults 70 and over, free of charge. A physiotherapist comes to the home, walks through the space, runs a 20-minute balance screen, and leaves a written plan.

How to get one

Three ways in:
1. Family doctor / nurse practitioner — ask for a "community fall prevention referral".
2. 8-1-1 — self-referral, no doctor needed. Ask for "HealthLink fall prevention intake".
3. Hospital discharge — automatic if there was a fall-related admission in the last 90 days.

What to expect

Current wait is 2–3 weeks. The clinician will look at lighting, rugs, bathroom layout, and footwear, and may recommend a follow-up with occupational therapy.

Why it matters

Falls remain the #1 reason a senior loses the ability to stay at home. A free assessment that lands in your living room is the single highest-leverage thing a BC family can book this month.
